Triton Cockatoos

Cacatua galerita triton

Beautiful Triton cockatoos originating from Papua New guinea and outlying islands.

Triton Cockatoos are relatively uncommon in the UK, compared to the other large cockatoos such as the Umbrella (cacatua alba) and the Moluccan (cacatua molucccensis).

They are an extremely beautiful cockatoo but can be extremely noisy.

Serious thought should be given before purchasing a Triton cockatoo as a pet. Hand reared birds can be so gentle and loving, but demanding of your time, and as with all cockatoos, they are a child which never grows up and leaves home.

See our page Feather Plucking in Cockatoos

Male and female can be distinguished visually as the birds reach maturity. As with other sulphur crested cockatoos males have a very dark brown to black iris and the females a light brown even red colour iris.

Breeding Ttiton Cockatoos

Triton cockatoos are also extremely difficult to pair. Males can be so aggressive towards the females (as with most cockatoos) during the breeding period sometimes leading to an untimely death of the female.

Any attempt at breeding these beautiful birds should be given careful consideration. They require extremely large spacious flights of not less than 25 feet in lenght, preferably longer.

They are in our experience continuous chewers, so plenty of fresh natural branches such as willow or apple must be provided.

Nest boxes should not be made available until the birds ar at least 6 years old. They may well attempt to mate before then but they are not psychologically ready for breeding until full adulthood.

Triton cockatoos are not a bird for the beginner.
