Palmitos Park
Gran Canaria

Moluccan Cockatoos enjoiyng a bath at Palmitos Park
Very sadly Palmitos Park was devastated by fire on 31 July 2007 with approximately 65% of the park destroyed. Many of the animals were evacuated. |
However, extremely distressing is the fact that many of the birds had (?) to be released as apparently no time was available for capture and evacuating them also. |
| Most perished, as being captive bred they knew nothing else and returned to what they knew. | The fire was arson and was unbelievably started by a forest ranger who was disgruntled over his employment terms. (see link for photos) Guy who started the fire on Gran Canaria and devastated Palmitos Park |
The park was closed for 12 months whilst major refurbishments took place. |
Re-opened 4 August 2008.

| Palmitos Park on the beautiful Canarian island of Gran Canaria has over 230 species of birds It is situated inland, approximately half an hour on the local bus from the centre of Maspalomas, one of the main tourist resorts on the island. You can also catch this local bus from further up the coast at Puerto Rico (shown on the map to your right). Gran Canaria is a popular holiday destination wth fantastic beaches, and has the added bonus of this beautiful bird park with lots of parrots. |

About Palmitos Park The total journey time from Puerto Rico to Palmitos Park is approximately 1 hour, and cost at the time about 4 Euros or £2.78 (approx). The entry fee was 17 Euros or £11.70 (2003), and well worth it. Palmitos Park is very clean and has large spacious aviaries, plus many good facilities. It also boasts a cactus garden, aquarium, butterfly house, orchid house and spectacular bird of prey display. A must on your 'to do' list if you are visiting Gran Canaria. |
|
Parrot Show There is also the obligatory 'parrot show' which should not be missed. Situated next to the restaurant the birds entertain you riding bikes or counting and just being cute in general. Please note these birds are well looked after, and the mental stimulation these parrots get from this show enhances their lives. (We don't condone the use of birds and other animals in circuses or similar). |

This page covers our second visit to Palmitos Park December 2003. We had previously been to Palmitos Park in 1995, and we found it had changed quite a bit - for the better. It had expanded with lots of new attractions, but still keeps the same principle that the animals are well looked after in spacious surroundings. As Palmitos Park is located in the mountains, it has the priviledge of being able to expand, without any compromise.to the birds.

Provided the flight is large enough, you supply enough nest boxes if the birds are adult, and also enough feeding stations, Sun Conures can be kept and even bred in a communal flight.
