Goffins Cockatoos
Cacatua goffini
|
Goffins Cockatoo, also known as the Tanimbar Cockatoo. Originating from the Tanimbar Islands of south eastern Indonesia.
This cockatoo is CITES Appendix 1 listed. CITES - Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species It is illegal to trade these cockatoos (buy or sell) without the correct Article 10 paperwork to accompany them. They are as all cockatoos difficult to pair and can be extremely hyper and aggressive when breeding. Fairly often males attack the females and kill or cause serious injury. Not a bird for the beginner. As they are CITES Appendix 1 listed, they are too rare to be household pets and should not be purchased as such. Description Size approx 12 inches, males are bigger. Goffins cockatoos have a helmet like crest which is raised when excited or alarmed. When adult males have dark, nearly black eyes and the females have brownish eyes. This is not always distinguishable easily and DNA feather sexing should be carried out if the birds are for breeding purposes. Pets? Just as a last note - if the birds are used for breeding purposes - don't hand rear the young for the pet trade, please..... |
