Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Timber
What is FSC?
|
FSC is an independent, non-profit, non governmental organisation (NGO), founded in 1993. It is an association of members from environmental groups, the timber trade, the forestry profession, community forestry groups and other organisations from around the world. FSC runs a global forest certification scheme which ensures that timber produced in 'certified' forests can be traced from the forest of origin to the end user i.e. you and me. In
other words any purchases you make, made from wood whether for DIY purposes
of actual furniture pieces - should carry the FSC logo. |
All FSC labeled timber and timber products come from forests independently certified as being responsibly managed to the highest environmental, social and economic standards . |
|
The environmental organisations supporting FSC timber include WWF (World Wide Fund For Nature), Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace, The National Trust and The Woodland Trust. |
Many large businesses are now also committed to its aims, however in varying degrees. Major
DIY stores such as B&Q and Homebase stock (some)
certified products and also take an active part in the FSC system of management. |

Indonesian Timber Approximately 88% of all timber originating from Indonesia is actually logged illegally. In Indonesia the timber industry is centred mainly around corruption, and human rights abuses. In that the local farmers and land owners are forced to sell their land to military and government officials. This contributing significantly to major environmental damage.

After pressure from Greenpeace, Jewson have this year pledged to 'suspend' imports of Indonesian rainforest plywood. Although not all their products are certified FSC (you need to check). Travis Perkins came under pressure earlier this year also for importing illegally logged timber:
Come on Homebase - how long does it actually take to make a decision? If Homebase care to comment - we would be more than willing to publish their answer, along with: Others, like Caledonian Plywood, still continue with this trade. Please write Caledonian Plywood and ask them to stop selling Indonesian rainforest plywood until it can be independently certified as from legal and sustainable sources. You can send a letter from here: |
