Double Yellow Headed Amazon Parrot

(Amazona Ochrocephala Oratrix/Amazona Oratrix Oratrix)

Originating from South America: Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras

The Double Yellow Headed Amazon is now a CITES Appendix 1 listed species.

As such it requires an Article 10 Certificate to accompany purchase or sale of these birds.

It is illegal to trade these birds without this certificate.

Amazon Parrots in general are extremely beautiful, but can be extremely noisy, not too pleasant as they mature and extremely frightening when breeding!

Having to enter the flight area with a hat on and carrying something to protect your face. During breeding they become very protective and will fly directly at your fact to attack you.

Many Amazon Parrots are endangered in their natural habitat, and those listed as CITES Appendix 1 species, should not under any circumstances be hand reared and sold as pets.

They do not become fully sexually mature until they are at least 5, 6 or even 7 years old.

Young birds do not have the 'double yellow' colouring on the head feathers and do look like Yellow Crowned Amazons.

The yellow head feathering starts to appear as they mature and by the time they are 5 or 6 years old they are in full adult plumage.

They are long lived parrots (or should be) and can reach up to 60 years in captivity.

They are generally hardy parrots and can live happily in an outdoor aviary provided they have an inside or undercover shelter for roosting out of the way of prevailing winds.

Amazons As Pets

As pets Double Yellow Head Amazons can learn to talk fairly well and can string a few words together. They are quite comical birds and usually very playful.

They are extremely beautiful, however as they are CITES Appendix 1 birds, care must be given over whether an Appendix 1 bird should be caged as a pet, as they are endangered in their natural habitat.

If they are kept are pets they need a fairly large strong parrot cage with plenty of toys to keep them occupied.

Parrot Food

The diet an Amazon requires to keep healthy is very varied.

A good quality parrot seed mix, plus plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, some nuts in the form of walnuts cedar or pine nuts etc. Plus a vitamin supplement to ensure they get everything they need dietray wise. During the breeding season a calcium supplement can and should be added either directly to the fresh food in a powder form or a liquid calcium Zolcal D can be added to the drinking water.

Amazon parrots can easily become prone to a lack of vitamin A in their diet, and subsequently this can cause respiratory problems with wheezing and heavy breathing, runny nose etc.

Fresh vegetables in the form of carrot, broccoli, sweetcorn and other dark vegetables are rich in vitamin A and should be a daily addition to their diet.

There are powdered vitamin supplements available to help counter balance this deficiency.
