Australian Cockatoos
Did you see that?
|
Palm Cockatoo Most of the Australian cockatoos are not common in the UK. The Roseate or Galah being perhaps the most readily available, but still expensive at around £800.00 each. Generally speaking they are much sought after, kept only in small numbers in mostly private collections, mainly because they are so very expensive to buy, if they can be found at all. Australia has very strict regulations concerning the export of their birds i.e. none allowed. Even though some of these species are persecuted and slaughtered in some regions of Australia by shooting, poisoning gassing, trapping and/or clubbing, yes clubbing to death; for alleged major crop damage and are classed as pests. See our page Cockatoo Culling in Australia - Did you know?

Many of the cockatoo species will feed together in the same area and some can also be found in the large cities, mainly the Sulphur Crested, Roseate and Corella.
How true the old saying 'the other mans grass is always greener'. British birds are sought after in Australia and never given a second thought over here.

Also often underrated but a very special little bird the Cockatiel. It has quite a long life span and is very popular as a pet in the UK. The popularity of the Cockatiel is mainly due to its gentle and friendly nature and talking ability (generally male birds only). |
