Australian Cockatoos
Did you see that?
|
Gang Gang Cockatoo pictured above Most of the Australian cockatoos are not common in the UK. The Roseate or Galah being perhaps the most readily available, but still expensive at around £800.00 each. Generally speaking they are much sought after, kept only in small numbers in mostly private collections, mainly because they are so very expensive to buy, if they can be found at all. Australia has very strict regulations concerning the export of their birds i.e. none allowed. Even though some of these species are persecuted and slaughtered in some regions of Australia by shooting, poisoning gassing, trapping and/or clubbing, yes clubbing to death; for alleged major crop damage and are classed as pests. See our page: |
Birds of a Feather Many of Australia's cockatoo species will feed together in the same area and some can also be found in the large cities. Mainly the Sulphur Crested, Roseate and Corella.
How true the old saying 'the other mans grass is always greener'. British birds are sought after in Australia and never given a second thought over here. Listed below general information and photos of both the white and black cockatoos, plus Gang Gang, Major Mitchells and Roseate.

The Cockatiel - Nymphicus Hollandicus
|
Often underrated but a very special little bird with a big personality is the Cockatiel. The cockatiel is a miniature cockatoo. The maiden of New Holland. It has quite a long life span up to 30 years, and is very popular as a pet in the UK. Size is approximately 11-12 inches including the long tail. The popularity of the Cockatiel is mainly due to its gentle and friendly nature and talking ability (generally male birds only). Male cockatiel shown in the photo right, with yellow head feathering and bright orange cheek patches. Females do not have the yellow head feathering and the cheek patches are fainter. Also individually listed on our page Cockatiels In memory of Little Bob |
