| No parrot should be left for long periods of time in its cage. However an adeequate sized cage is necessary for all parrots on certain occasions, such as when you are not around or during the night. This is purely for the safety of your bird. Please remember: As a legal requirement your bird must be able to stretch its wings (unclipped) fully in its cage in all directions. (Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981) |
| There are today fortunately many good quality cages available, which are perfect for smaller parrots. Until fairly recently this was not the case, and finding a large cage suitable for a small parrot was very difficult. |
| Firstly, the main point to consider is the size of the cage. Smaller parrots such as Senegals, Caiques, Conures and Cockatiels (which are parrots) still need a good sized cage, but with narrower bar spacing than a cage suitable for a Cockatoo, Macaw, Amazon or African Grey Parrot. |

| A medium to large parrot will also require a stronger cage than will a Senegal or similar sized bird. |

| The style of cage you choose has to be a personal choice (round cages are unsuitable for parrots). If you find yourself limited for space in a particular room but like the idea of a playstand, you can opt for an open top cage. | Likewise the colour of the cage you choose will be a personal choice, but there are also so many good colours to choose from, you could be spolt for choice. |
| Keeping your parrot stimulated Once you have your cage remember it needs furnishing with perches and toys to keep your parrot occupied. Both destructable and non-destructable toys are necessary. Wooden toys to destroy are great as parrots have a basic need to chew. Acrylic toys which are difficult to destroy come in all shapes and sizes and these keep your parrot's mind occupied.
