OK, you think you want a parrot? Or you already have birds? Want more information? Read on. |
|
Our aim in putting together this web site is to provide information for anyone interested in keeping parrots. We cover a wide variety of species from Cockatoos to Cockatiels, with information ranging from cockatoo and other parrot suitability (or not) as hand reared pets, species description with photographs, aviary breeding and welfare. Our site has expanded and now also covers environmental issues such as cockatoo culling, imported parrots, rainforest destruction, illegal logging etc..
Despite plenty of captive breeding, wild caught birds are still trapped for export trade from Africa and South America. Did you know one of the methods used to trap African Greys is to put glue on the trees so the birds become stuck and cannot fly away? Do you really want to buy a so called 'hand reared baby' from people who deal in these wild caught birds? Visit our links page, which contains various sites of interest both for the pet bird owner and breeder, (we do not include links from large commercial breeding facilities). As well as the links to sites providing information on the controversial issues of bird trapping, exporting and deforestation. |
We can never endorse the culling of cockatoos in Australia, which is primitive and barbaric. Did you know one of the methods used, is to catch large numbers of cockatoos in huge nets and club them to death with large poles, another is to poison them? Only the poison (as if this was not bad enough) takes many days to kill them, during this time they suffer unimaginably, and if they are still alive after that, and found; they are finished off, again by being clubbed to death. Trapping and killing cockatoos (and other bird species) by 'the man on the street' is not legal ( this doesn't mean to say it doesn't happen), however each year licenses are legally issued to trappers and farmers, to carry out these horrific culls.
'I do
not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with
sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use.' In some years over 10,000 Parrots and Lorikeets are shot in various fruit growing districts in Australia. 'If there has been a cockatoo explosion over recent decades it is man made, we are planting more crops to sustain the human population on what used to be scrubland or rainforest, the natural homes of these cockatoos. Cockatoos eat grain, corn, cereals, fruit; planting these crops and destroying their issued to trappers and farmers, to carry out these horrific culls. |
